There is a time in Mount Sackville when everyone starts spending slightly more time outside their classroom doors and students and staff pile up reusable materials in the corners. There is a time of year when our classroom doors, rather plain most of the time, change into colourful, sparkling, lively creations. It means the time for the Christmas Door Competition has come. The rules are simple and plain. Students decorate doors and doors only (no walls, floors or ceilings pretty please). All decorations must be created from preloved materials and follow the philosophy of recycle, reduce reuse. Each class needs to display a written piece explaining their concept of the door and listing all the materials used.
Our judges had a hard nut to crack this year. There were so many Christmas and school related puns, beautiful crafts and eye-catching creations. After lots of discussions debates and deliberations the creators of the best Christmas door in their year groups could be revealed. The Overall Best Christmas Door Award went to Class KEANE, who inspired by the song I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas by Gayla Peevey created a three dimensional interactive hippo.
Class Keane put some of the lyrics and video link on reused paper rather than printing QR codes as they felt the use of printer ink was not a sustainable choice. Their door includes the names of all Class Keane students as well as their tutor to show how they came together to produce this door and how each member of the class is equally important. The hippopotamus even opens its mouth as you pull the string! Only reused material was used to create the door: cardboard from the school and old art and crafts paper. Class Keane also include a sign saying SAVE THE HIPPO to highlight the issue of hippos becoming endangered.
Well done Class Keane for turning an idea into an outstanding creation. You made a splashing impression on everyone (PUN intended).
